Smoking tobacco and other substances is an ancient indigenous practice in the Americas. In times past, groups in central and southern Chile smoked at social events, religious ceremonies and cleansing rites. Today, smoking pipes such as the ones displayed here is still customary among Mapuche machis, who use tobacco and smoke in rituals involving the land, healing of the sick and divination.
