Chile before Chile

Sobremakuñ, the ceremonial poncho

These short ponchos are used by Mapuche men on festive occasions and are more colourful than longer ones (called makuñ). They are similar to the riding ponchos of Central Chile’s traditional cattle drivers (huasos), but display Mapuche iconography. Note the poncho with the figure of a horse and rider and the owner’s initials underneath. These items are woven by the mothers or spouses of the men who wear them.
