Sacred felines

Because the Diaguita lived in close proximity with nature, they endowed certain animals with extraordinary power. The feline was a symbol of wisdom and strength, but above all it represented the people’s connection with the supernatural world. These ceramic vessels show the importance of those powerful carnivores in the religious belief system of this Near North culture.
