Women and stone

Women are the subject of these small stone sculptures. Notice the female sexual features on the mortar, and the cavity in the womb to emphasize women’s fertility. Stone mortars have been associated with domestic work and food gathering since time immemorial and are still used to this day. These figures have the combined nose-and-eyebrows, a feature present in southern Chilean art since the earliest times and still employed today.
